The president of the Boston chapter for NAAAP, Victoria (Vicky) Liu, moved to Boston four years ago from Windsor, Connecticut. This is now her third year with NAAAP.  She received her Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. Her current day job is very different from her role in NAAAP. As an ambulatory clinical pharmacist, she works in a primary care clinic and directly works with patients to help them manage their chronic disease states, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Liu also teaches pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, medical students and medical residents. When she was a child, she knew that she wanted to do something in healthcare; thus she pursued her dreams to become the leader she is now. Additionally, she enjoys embarking on new adventures by going scuba diving, zip-lining and even cave exploring. She has also traveled to Greece, where discovering their mythology and culture gave her a new outlook on life.

Liu first got in contact with NAAAP after attending a social event, where she met people that encouraged her to volunteer for the organization. Her first event was the Annual BBQ, where she got to meet many board members and leaders from NAAAP. She then got involved with the Training and Development Committee, which focuses on internal development for NAAAP Boston’s own executive team and leaders. In addition, she organized the internal retreat for the year. She enjoyed her first retreat and found that the NAAAP team really cared about each other.

After taking on the position as president of NAAAP, Liu developed a unique skillset. She believes that it is her role to empower and inspire her leadership team so that they can help NAAAP accomplish its goals in advancing professional development, leadership development and community engagement. Liu is involved with overseeing the strategic direction of NAAAP as well as actively engaging and supporting the NAAAP Boston leaders to help them become successful. As a result of her involvement, she meets a range of diverse people who help her expand her views and her thinking. She acquires skills and encounters specific experiences through NAAAP that her day job does not offer. This opportunity to grow as a leader is incredibly powerful and valuable to her.

Despite the fact that Liu initially joined NAAAP for the professional and leadership development, she stayed for the support and the NAAAP family. Thanks to Victoria, NAAAP Boston chapter has grown so much throughout the years she has been in this family.

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday, and that you are enjoying what is left of 2016. It has certainly been a monumental year for us, especially as we celebrated our 30-year Anniversary at our Conference and Gala back in October!

I would like to share important news: I have nominated, and our Board has approved, the appointment of Victoria (Vicky) Liu as NAAAP Boston President & CEO, effective January 1, 2017. Vicky has been a long-term champion for the NAAAP Boston Leadership Team, and has been a trusted adviser to me throughout my entire term. She has spent the last 2 years working closely with me as the VP of Operations, and due to her dedication and initiative, we managed to expand our leadership and volunteer teams by significant orders of magnitude, and have established documentation and processes for our committees, streamlining our organization as a whole. She will be an exceptional representative of NAAAP Boston for 2017 and beyond.

Serving as NAAAP Boston President over the past 2 years was truly an honor, and a responsibility that I did not take lightly. I am grateful for all the new connections I have made with our members, volunteers, sponsors, partners and community networks. Our organization continues to be at the vanguard of Asian-American Leadership and Professional Development across all industries, sectors, and functions, and we have continued to sustain and develop programs and events relevant for our community. I was happy to be a part of it, and have been inspired by so many individuals that I have met along the way. That said, it certainly "took a village", and I am so thankful to the Board for their support and mentorship. I would also be remiss if I did not make mention of my peers on the Senior Leadership Team, who were instrumental in fulfilling the NAAAP Boston vision with me over the past several years.

NAAAP Boston is delighted to announce the appointment of Jesse Nandhavan as President & CEO, effective immediately. Outgoing President & CEO Eric Lam will be working on transition with new president.

The Board of Directors is gratified to have Jesse Nandhavan step up to this critical role.

Nandhavan joined NAAAP Boston about two years ago as Co­Director of the Corporate Relations Committee, and quickly developed solid relationships with existing and new Sponsors. He became an integral part of NAAAP Boston Chapter leadership team, contributing to organization­wide operations meetings as well as NAAAP National major events.  Most recently, Nandhavan was a key driver of NAAAP Boston’s 3rd Annual Leadership Forum, a showcase conference which engages Asian professionals on career and leadership topics and highlights NAAAP Boston’s Corporate Sponsors.  In his new role Nandhavan has “landed running” having pulled together a new team of Officers, who will be introduced separately.

For the past two years Eric Lam has led NAAAP Boston as President & CEO.  Lam stepped down from that role as of November 8, 2014 to further focus on his professional career.  The NAAAP Boston Board of Directors is very grateful for Lam’s contributions and would like to acknowledge his outstanding leadership. Highlights of Lam’s major accomplishments include:

• Lam initiated NAAAP Boston’s Annual Leadership Forum, a showcase conference which engages Asian professionals on career and leadership topics and highlights NAAAP Boston’s Corporate Sponsors.

• During Lam’s term, NAAAP Boston has enjoyed solid growth in terms of membership, sponsorship, and programming innovation. He elevated NAAAP Boston’s brand and visibility throughout Greater Boston’s professional and diversity communities.

• Lam strengthened our all­volunteer organization to enable more volunteers to become avidly involved and grow as leaders.  He also introduced new tools and processes for operational efficiency.

• Most impressively, Lam led succession planning that has resulted in a clean transition to a new team of NAAAP Boston Officers.  He remains available in the short run for transition, and in the long run as an avid NAAAP advocate.
